Frequently Asked Questions about NLP Coaching

Everything you need to know about Neuro-Linguistic Programming — from the basics to costs and what happens in a session.

Important notice: NLP Coaching is not a medical or psychotherapeutic treatment and does not replace one. For health or psychological complaints, please always consult a doctor or psychotherapist first.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a communication and change model developed in the 1970s by Richard Bandler and John Grinder. They studied how exceptionally successful therapists and communicators worked — including Milton Erickson (hypnotherapy), Virginia Satir (family therapy), and Fritz Perls (Gestalt therapy) — and extracted their patterns into teachable models. NLP combines insights from linguistics, neurology, and psychology into a practical toolkit for change and communication.
NLP works with the language of the unconscious — inner images (visual), inner voices (auditory), and body sensations (kinaesthetic) that form our inner experience. Through targeted techniques such as anchoring (linking positive states), reframing (changing meaning), belief change work (transforming limiting beliefs), and parts work (resolving inner conflicts), dysfunctional patterns are identified and replaced with helpful ones. NLP works quickly and is solution-focused.
NLP is suitable for anyone seeking conscious change in their life. Typical clients include people dealing with fears, phobias, blockages, or self-doubt; executives and entrepreneurs who want to improve their communication and impact; people looking to restart after burnout; individuals in transitional phases (career change, separation, new beginnings); and anyone who simply wants to reach their full potential.
NLP is known for its speed of effect. First noticeable changes often emerge as early as the first or second session. Specific phobias can be fully resolved in 1–3 sessions. Deeper transformations affecting the entire thinking and behaviour system — such as identity work, deep belief change, or chronic patterns — typically take 3–6 sessions.
The scientific evidence for NLP is nuanced. There are positive efficacy studies, particularly in the areas of communication, anxiety treatment, and coaching. At the same time, robust replication studies are lacking for some NLP models. However, many techniques used in NLP — such as cognitive restructuring, exposure, and behaviour-based interventions — are deeply rooted in empirical psychology. As a coaching method (not a clinical therapy), NLP has a strong practical track record.
The free initial consultation (30 minutes) is complimentary. Individual sessions (60–90 minutes) are priced individually depending on topic and format. Multi-session packages offer a benefit. Please get in touch via the contact form — I will be happy to send you current pricing and suitable offers.
A typical session lasts 60–90 minutes and follows a clear structure: we begin with a check-in on your current state and the goal for the session. Then we work with the appropriate NLP techniques on your topic — this could be anchoring, belief change work, parts work, timeline work, or another method. At the end we anchor the insights, check ecological fit, and develop concrete next steps for your everyday life.
NLP coaching is explicitly solution- and future-oriented: we work to build new resources, achieve concrete goals, and change specific patterns. Psychotherapy, by contrast, is often depth-psychological, diagnosis-oriented, and focused on the past. NLP coaching does not replace psychotherapy and does not make clinical diagnoses. For clinical diagnoses such as severe depression, PTSD, or personality disorders, professional psychotherapy is the primary choice. NLP can provide complementary support.
Yes — NLP has well-established and well-documented techniques for these topics. For anxiety and phobias, the Fast Phobia Cure is commonly used, complemented by resource anchors. For burnout, we work with values models, pattern interrupts, and resource building. For self-sabotage, we use parts work and belief change work. Many clients experience significant relief after just a few sessions. Important: for clinical diagnoses, NLP coaching complements medical treatment but does not replace it.
No special preparation is needed. Helpful things to consider beforehand: What specifically do I want to change? How would I know the session was successful? What have I already tried? Openness and curiosity are the most important ingredients for a productive NLP session.
Both are possible and equally effective. Online sessions via Zoom or MS Teams offer maximum flexibility and are suitable for clients who are not near Heidelberg. In-person sessions are available on request. We'll discuss what works best for you in the initial consultation.
This depends strongly on your topic, goals, and the depth of change you are seeking. For a specific problem (e.g. a single phobia or a concrete communication pattern) 1–3 sessions may be sufficient. For broader personal development, deep belief change work, or overcoming complex patterns, 6–12 sessions are recommended. In the free initial consultation we'll develop a realistic assessment together.
